Sudden power outages can be frustrating and troublesome, especially when they last a long time. If a power outage is 3 hours or less, you need not be concerned about losing your perishable foods. For prolonged power outages, though, there are steps you can take to minimize food loss and to keep all members of your household as comfortable as possible. Have a plan and discuss it in your household.
Power outages can be reported to the Groton Electric Light Department by calling (978) 448-1150. Additional information can be found at Groton Electric.
To help preserve your food, keep the following supplies in your home:
Keep food as safe as possible.
Electrical equipment
Throw out unsafe food.
Heating systems will not be functioning when the power goes out. If you have a woodstove or fireplace make sure that it is always in working order by having a chimney sweep inspect and clean it. Make sure you have ample clean dry wood that can be accessed easily for heating.
Caution: Carbon Monoxide Kills
Do we maintain shelters?
